The Schola Cantorum choral society is starting its traditional round of Christmas concerts in Asturias this Saturday. With the assistance of the EDP Foundation, the society will be starting its tour at the San Pedro Parochial Church in Grado on Saturday 14 December at 21:00 h. The group is led by José Fernández Avello, with piano accompaniment by Cristina Cañedo Estrada.
Schola Cantorum's Christmas concert schedule has a wide and varied programme this year. It starts off with ‘Piel Canela’ by Los Panchos, and combines popular carols and contemporary works such as Leonard Cohen's ‘Hallelujah’.
After the concert in Grado, Schola Cantorum will be visiting Cangas del Narcea on 15 December (Santa María Magdalena Church at 19:00 h), La Felguera on 21 December (San Pedro de la Felguera Church at 19:30 h) and Candás on 22 December (San Félix de Candás Church at 19:00 h). The concerts are free of charge.
Schola Cantorum was founded in April 1993 by José Fernández Avello, who is still its director. The choir's singular sound effect has earned it a special niche within the musical panorama of Asturias.
Luz Minera is the title of the winning project of the second Public Art Ideas Competition, a competition organised by the EDP Foundation.
