With the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Andra Mari Abesbatza Choir leading the way, under the baton of conductor Manfred Honeck, and the collaboration of sopranos Christina Landshamer, Simona Saturova, tenor Werner Gure and bass Paul Armin Edelmann, the opening concert of the 76 edition of the San Sebastian Musical Fortnight was held at the Kursaal Center in San Sebastian, sponsored by the EDP Foundation.
Symphony No. 93 in D major by Joseph Haydn and he Great Mass in C minor by Mozart were greatly enjoyed by the 1,800 spectators who attended the live concert on Sunday, August 2.
The Mahler Chamber Orchestra is one of the soundest chamber orchestras on the current musical scene. The group started their career in the late '90s. This is their first visit to the Musical Fortnight and they do so under the command of maestro Manfred Honeck, who was here at the festival in 2008, conducting the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Honeck is the music director of the Pittsburgh Orchestra, in addition to being the principal guest conductor of the aforementioned Czech Philharmonic from 2013.
Luz Minera is the title of the winning project of the second Public Art Ideas Competition, a competition organised by the EDP Foundation.
