On this occasion, the Swiss ensemble chose a repertoire with music by Beethoven and Wagner. Both composers were renowned for their masterful use of the orchestra and for exploring new musical horizons. Saturday's concert began with Symphony No. 7 in A Major, op. 92. The programme was completed with pieces by Wagner from operas from the Bayreuth canon.
Ataulfo Argenta worked very closely with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Throughout his career, he made 10 recordings with this ensemble and, when he died, he was in negotiations to conduct it on a tour of the United States.
The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande is made up of 112 musicians and enjoys a great reputation for the quality of its recordings and for working on its repertoire of 20th century French and Russian pieces. In the coming months, it is planned to reissue all of the recordings made by the Swiss orchestra under the baton of its founder, Ernest Ansermet.
