130 university students, mostly from Oviedo University, have received recognition today for having completed the Martín González del Valle 2019-20 internships. To acknowledge the effort and dedication that they have shown, and adapting the event to meet the current public health situation, this morning the EDP Foundation has organised a 100% digital ceremony. The Facebook platform has been the one chosen for an open streaming broadcast with the participation of the rector of Oviedo University, Santiago García Granda, and the CEO of the EDP Foundation, Vanda Martins. Both of them thanked the students for the attitude that they have shown and their interventions provided the finishing touch to the 36th year of the programme.

The students have faced a two-fold challenge: acquiring their first experience of work at a company like EDP, and adapting to teleworking because of Covid-19. The time they have spent spent at EDP has been their first contact with working life and is crucial in helping them to enter the world of business.

Thanks to the programme, the leading work placement scheme at Oviedo University which has been allocated almost one million euros, degree and master’s students in more than 20 specialities (including Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Law and Commerce and Marketing) complete their education with real work experience. In many cases, the students complete up to 800 hours of training at EDP.

The initiative, which this year celebrates its 36th anniversary, forms part of the activities that the EDP Foundation promotes in the field of education. It is named after Martín González del Valle, who presided over the energy company from 1987 to 1999, and was then honorary chairman of the company and the EDP Foundation until his death in 2015.

Martín González del Valle Scholarships are paid and have a maximum duration of ten months. Internships are carried out in all areas of the company, under the supervision of tutors, who train and help students. They also take part in innovation and continuous improvement programmes, where they provide their ideas and share experiences with the other students.

As well as the agreement with Oviedo University, the EDP Foundation has also signed agreements with other Spanish universities and schools to promote the training of more students at the different facilities and workplaces that the company has in other communities.

The aim of these grants is to provide practical training at EDP for students from Oviedo University and other universities in Spain. This is the leading work placement scheme at the University and one of the most important initiatives run by the EDP Foundation. Since it was set up in 1983, over 100 people who took part in the programme have gone on to join the workforce of the EDP Group in Spain.
