The Santa Cruz chapel in Cangas de Onís now has a new system to light up its outside. This initiative, promoted by the EDP Foundation, has enhanced the visibility of one of the town’s main and most visited monuments, which was built in the 7th century.
The new installation was switched on by the Mayor of Cangas de Onís, José Manuel González, and the director of the EDP Foundation, Nicanor Fernández. Both stressed the importance of this project, which greatly enhances the chapel and its setting.
A mixed system is used to light up the chapel. On the one hand, there is a general lighting system from two points and, on the other hand, five projectors are integrated in the setting to showcase the chapel's most outstanding details.
Energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly LED-technology projectors, which allow the natural colour of the monument to be seen, have been used for this project. The technology used cuts maintenance cost, as the installed appliances have a service life of 50,000 hours.
This project is part of the EDP Foundation initiative aimed at improving the environment where the company operates. The lighting up of different places of the cultural and historical heritage of the Principality of Asturias is an important aspect of the Foundation’s activity.
The lighting-up projects implemented by the Foundation include the Revillagigedo Palace, the Historical Building of Oviedo University, the Campoamor Theatre, the Evaristo Valle Museum, the Valnalón Cooling Tower at the Cider Museum, and the Covadonga Basilica and Cave.
Luz Minera is the title of the winning project of the second Public Art Ideas Competition, a competition organised by the EDP Foundation.
