Students from the Penlés Support Centre for the Integration of Disabled People took part in releasing 2,000 trout into the River Narcea. The activity, which enjoys the collaboration of the EDP Foundation, was organised by the Asociación de Pescadores Fuentes del Narcea (fishermen's association of the Narcea).
This is the sixth year in which students from this centre have joined this initiative, which on this occasion took place in the Los Nogales area, in front of the Roman bridge in Cangas del Narcea. As well as taking part in the release, the students learned about the characteristics of these trout from the people in charge of the fishermen's association. The president of the Asociación de Pescadores Fuentes del Narcea, Román Herrero, said that “these types of activities make people and society aware of the importance of re-stocking our rivers, because they allow us to conserve the aquatic ecosystem and keep it in the best condition. The specimens that we put in are wild and have the purest genetics in the Atlantic Arc".
The fingerlings that were released were raised on the fish farm that the association has in Villajur - Regla de Naviego. They are the last to re-stock the Narcea this year. 50,000 were released in total. In addition, the association released 7,000 salmon for the first time, which were also bred at its facilities.
The Asociación de Pescadores Fuentes del Narcea has taken part in re-stocking Asturian rivers for more than ten years, complying with the timetable of the government of the Principality of Asturias. It has the collaboration of the EDP Foundation, whose commitment to fish re-stocking has extended to other Asturian rivers for more than a decade, with the support of the Royal Asturian River Fishing Association.
The economic newspaper Expansión recognised the organisation as a ‘sustainable institution’ at the sixth edition of the ‘Innovación + Sostenibilidad + Red 2020’ awards
