This Thursday, twelve students from the Penlés Support Centre for the Integration of Disabled People took part in re-stocking the River Narcea. The activity was carried out in the Los Nogales area and was organised by the Asociación de Pescadores Fuentes (fishermen's association of the Narcea) sources, in collaboration with the EDP Foundation. In total, 20,000 trout were introduced in the river.
This is the third year that the disabled centre has taken part in this initiative. The students learned about the characteristics of these trout from members of the fishermen's association. They explained the importance of the trout to them in the preservation of the aquatic ecosystem and their reproductive cycle. As the president of the association, Román Herrero, stated, "the trout that have been introduced are one hundred percent wild and are the most genetically pure in the Atlantic Arc".
The Asociación de Pescadores Fuentes del Narcea has taken part in re-stocking Asturian rivers for the past eight years, complying with the timetable of the Ministry of Agri-livestock Farming and Indigenous Resources. It has the collaboration of the EDP Foundation, whose commitment to fish re-stocking has extended to other Asturian rivers for more than a decade, with the support of the Royal Asturian River Fishing Association.
Luz Minera is the title of the winning project of the second Public Art Ideas Competition, a competition organised by the EDP Foundation.
