The EDP Foundation will be the official sponsor of the upcoming EDP DesafiOSOmiedo Salomon (EDP/Salomon Somiedo Challenge), which will be held on August 1. The third edition of this demanding mountain race will will have the participation of 600 athletes, who will run round the municipality of Somiedo over two distances, 86 and 45 kilometres. With this sponsorship, the EDP Foundation maintains its commitment to and support for sports initiatives in the region.

Valle del Lago, la Foz de Arroxos, Lagos de Saliencia, la Farrapona and Pola de Somiedo are some of the places that the athletes will visit on a route designed to avoid the more sensitive areas in this Natural Park. The EDP Salomon DesafiOSOmiedo has two distances, the ultra trail (86 kilometres) and the marathon (45 kilometres). Somiedo will be the scene of the start and finish of the long distance race. From there, the runners will face a cumulative ascent and descent of 9,450 metres and will go over the summit of El Cornón, the highest point at 2,188 metres, as well as other mountain passes. The marathon will set off from Valle del Lago and end at Pola de Somiedo. In this event, athletes must cover a cumulative ascent and descent of over 5,000 metres.

This year, the race is on the calendar of the Skyrunner National Series, which includes outstanding races like the Transvulcania and the Ultra Pirineu.

Sponsorship of the EDP DesafiOSOmiedo Salomon by the EDP Foundation is a boost for the race in Somiedo. The company carries out the activity of electric power generation at the hydro-electric power station of La Malva in the town in a way that respects the environment. This plant came into operation in 1917 and is the oldest electrical power generation installation in Asturias. The EDP Foundation sponsors a number of sporting events in the region, like the San Silvestre race in Oviedo, the half marathon in Cangas de Onis (Ruta de la Reconquista) and Asturian Sailing Week.

The EDP DesafiOSOmiedo Salomon (EDP/Salomon Somiedo Challenge) is an ultra trail which, since 2013, has been run in the Somiedo Natural Park. The race is a coexistence of runners, volunteers and inhabitants of Somiedo over the first weekend of August. It also means a big boost for tourism in the area and knowledge of customs and traditions.
