The EDP Foundation joins the work of the Food Bank of Asturias

04.21.2020

The EDP Foundation has provided 15,000 euros to the Food Bank of Asturias. This contribution will allow the entity to continue its essential activity at this time, when it has seen an increase in the number of requests for help, which it has had to deal with with fewer volunteers due to the restrictions imposed by the state of alarm.

The Food Bank will use the donation from the EDP Foundation to purchase food, distribute it and to cover the costs of its warehouse in the Polígono de Argame, in Morcín.

In the last three weeks, the Food Bank of Asturias has responded to the needs of 5,400 people, to whom it has distributed 111,000 kilos of food through 48 organisations.

The entity has continued to meet the usual requests, in addition to those of new groups affected by the situation caused by the coronavirus, such as single-parent families or the self-employed who have had to stop their activity.

They are doing this work with only about half of their volunteers. Currently, they only have volunteers in the logistics area, where they have gone from having 20 people to just 8 during the state of alarm.

This initiative is in addition to those that the energy company has been working on in recent weeks to help its customers and society in the fight against COVID-19. These include the delivery of 460 computers to Asturian students to bridge the digital gap, collaboration in the manufacture of hydrogel and masks, and the creation of the Fondo Clientes Solidarios (a fund for customers undertaking solidarity projects), through which they will supply free energy for two months to those customers who are carrying out solidarity projects, such as 'Makers Asturias', who are producing protection visors with their 3D printers.
