Record participation in the EDP Ruta de la Reconquista Half Marathon

05.17.2016

More than 1,400 people will take part on Saturday, May 28 in the 29th Ruta de la Reconquista Half Marathon. This figure represents a record participation in one of the most representative popular races in the region. The event is organised by the Cangas de Onis Municipal Sports and Athletics Club and sponsored by the Town Council and EDP, which also gives its name to the race.

The EDP Ruta de la Reconquista Half Marathon was presented at the Cangas de Onis Council Assembly Hall by the mayor, José Manuel González, the director of the Municipal Sports Board, Jose Maria Prieto, the president of the Cangas de Onis Athletics Club, José Fuente and the director of the EDP Foundation, Nicanor Fernández, as well as other representatives of entities collaborating in the event.

The race will start at 6 pm. The 21 kilometre route, which has been approved by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation, starts next to the Roman bridge in Cangas de Onis. From there, participants will take the road linking this town with Covadonga, passing the cave of Our Lady of Covadonga. They will turn back at the Plaza de la Basilica and return to Cangas de Onis, where the finish post will be located.

The number of participants may still rise. Registration will be open on the race website until Monday, May 23 or until the 1,600 places that the organisation has provided for this year have been filled.

Competitors can collect their running numbers from the Sports Hall on Friday, May 27, from 4.30 pm and on Saturday up to an hour before the event.

Runners will try to beat James Moiben’s record time of 1 hour, 7 minutes and 35 seconds, which he set in 2012. Last year, David Fernández was less than a minute off that time. He stopped the clock at 1 hour, 8 minutes and 18 seconds.

EDP support for this historic event is part of its commitment to sport and healthy living. More than 100,000 people take part every year in more than 30 races that the company supports. In Asturias, EDP sponsors the EDP DesafiOSOmiedo Salomon, the EDP San Silvestre in Oviedo and various races on the calendar of the Asturian Federation of Mountain Sports, Climbing and Hiking, among other events.
