Record number of competitors on the Ruta de la Reconquista half marathon

06.01.2015

Yet again this year, the EDP Foundation sponsored the XXVIII Ruta de la Reconquista Half Marathon that took place in Cangas de Onis on 31 May 2015.

The route, covering a total of 21.097 km, was the usual one, starting from the Cangas de Onís Roman Bridge (national monument), through the Covadonga Sanctuary and then back to Cangas de Onís and the finishing line in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the town square.

There were record entries for the XXVIII half marathon and the 1,300 available entry bibs were all snatched up weeks before the most famous and popular race on the Asturias athletics calendar.

This year, the Ruta de la Reconquista Half Marathon was supporting Aurora, a little girl from Asturias suffering from a congenital nevus condition.

In addition to the cash prizes for the men and women who finished in the top places, a salmon was given to the winner in the men's category and a Gamonéu cheese to the winner in the women’s.

David Fernández Ginzo, the current regional record holder, finished with a winning time of 01:08:18, just ahead of last year’s winner.

In the women’s category, Itziar Méndez, beat the Spanish Marathon Champion to win the race with a time of 01:26:36.
