Cáritas, the Red Cross and EDP Foundation working together in the ‘Solidarity Energy’ programme

05.16.2016

Cáritas, the Red Cross and the EDP Foundation have signed a cooperation agreement for the 2016 ‘Solidarity Energy’ project. This scheme, which will be run in Asturias, Bizkaia, Cantabria and Zaragoza, seeks to increase the safety, wellbeing and energy efficiency of families in need. The EDP Foundation has earmarked €160,000 for this project.

The agreement was signed with Cáritas in Asturias and with the Spanish Red Cross and Cáritas in Vizcaya, by the Executive Director of the EDP Foundation, Vanda Martins, and the managers of the entities in both provinces, the Cáritas Director in Asturias, Ignacio Alonso, the Chair of the Bizkaia Red Cross, Javier Zárraga, and the director of Bizkaia Cáritas, Carlos Bargos.

The entities thus aim to analyse, identify and implement measures aimed at cutting energy bills and change consumption habits. Nearly 160 families will take part this year. Employees from different EDP divisions will be volunteering in the programme.

‘Solidarity Energy’ is deployed in different phases. The NGO working with the programme identify the families who qualify and the company then plan the visits to their homes. During the visits, the technicians conduct an energy audit and prepare an energy certificate, along with proposing energy efficiency improvement measures for each of the families.

The company then develops a plan of action to implement the improvement measures in each home, and then the relevant follow-up and checks will be carried out.

The measures adopted in the households include replacing the existing lamps by others with LED technology, improving the efficiency of gas and electric equipment, replacing boilers, improving heating control or the safety of the electric installation.

As part of the ‘Solidarity Energy’ programme, training will be organised for the partner entities, which will then be passed on to the families. The training consists of actions to improve consumption habits and savings measures.

The EDP Foundation is running the ‘Solidarity Energy’ programme for the second year running. In 2015, over 60 families of Asturias, the Basque Country and Galicia took part in this project, involving 27 EDP volunteers. The Foundation allocated €100,000 to the programme.
