“One Drawing, One Tree” Over 1,000 children took part in the Oviedo Spring Festival with this slogan, organised by the EDP Foundation. This initiative, which was held in the Plaza de la Gesta square, consists of swapping drawings on nature for trees. The EDP Foundation handed out a total of 1,000 cherry tree seedlings.

It is the third year that the EDP Foundation has held this initiative in Oviedo. It has a dual goal: on the one hand, to improve biodiversity by means of planting trees and, on the other hand, to raise awareness among children on the importance of looking after the environment.

In order to facilitate the process, the EDP Foundation handed out templates in the local schools in the run up to event and so many children turned up with their finished drawing. The company organised an area with the templates and all the material needed for the children to make their drawing during the activity. The characters of the Viva Nuestra Energia [Long Live Our Energy] educational programme also took part.

The Fund for the Protection of Wild Animals (FAPAS), an NGO with which the EDP Foundation has run numerous projects linked to conserving and protecting the environment, also helped with the handing out of the cherry tree seedlings.

The tree planning programme is the highlight of the initiatives run by the EDP Foundation, in conjunction with FAPAS. Since the programme got underway in 2009, the Foundation has planted over 80,000 trees in Asturias.

This year, the EDP Foundation will plant 20,000 seedlings in the region, an initiative that will prioritise those zones damaged by forest fires last December. This programme will help to increase the forest stands and produce fruit to feed the local fauna, thus helping to improve the biodiversity.

The “One Drawing, One Tree” initiative will also be held in Santander (12 April), Bilbao (14 April) and Gijón (18 April). In total, the EDP Foundation will hand out 4,000 cherry tree seedlings as part of this action.
